Do DIADs work in rural areas?

I'm not a UPS driver but am curious about the capabilities of the DIADs. I often track my packages and do not see instant updates on packages that have been delivered. I live in a rural area so I'm wondering do the scanners work on cell phone networks? If so do you have to be in a service area for the upload to happen?

If this is the wrong place to ask I apologize.

Perhaps.

This is the problem with technology. Everybody wants instant updates.

Half the fun is anticipation.

The DIAD scans and saves the tracking information but doesn't transmit tracking information immediately. Usually within 15 minutes or so. It does use cell phone frequencies and there can be dead spots out in the middle of nowhere but that only happens rarely.

Thank you guys. I suspected that was the case. It's not that I want instant updates I was just curious about how it worked.
