DHL expanding delivery service in Atlanta, adding more targets to UPS’ back – Atlanta Business Chronicle

DHL is turning up the heat on UPS following an announcement Friday that it will be launching a delivery service for online retailers in eight U.S. cities, including Atlanta.

The German logistics company said it will be “piloting a range of new technologies” in its U.S. operations, including DHL Parcel Metro, a service that uses customized software that lets DHL create a ‘virtual delivery network” of local and regional contractors that will make same-day or next-day deliveries from retailers and fulfillment centers to homes.

“For consumers, the service creates a seamless experience: an online and mobile interface allows consumers to track shipments in real-time, communicate special instructions to their courier, reschedule a delivery and rate their delivery experience,” DHL said in a news release.

Deutsche Post’s DHL expands U.S. delivery service to take on FedEx, UPS – Reuters

Deutsche Post AG’s DHL is launching a U.S. urban delivery service for online retailers that it has been testing in some cities, according to company officials and marketing materials seen by Reuters.

The rollout of its Parcel Metro service will put DHL in direct competition with dominant players United Parcel Service Inc and FedEx Corp. DHL’s contractors will take parcels directly to homes instead of its usual practice of dropping off packages for delivery by the U.S. Postal Service.

Cowen & Co analyst Helane Becker said she believes Amazon is working with DHL to expand its presence in the United States.

While publicly trying to distance itself from the NRA, FedEx has made a secret agreement with the association and other major players in the firearms industry.

In a stark contrast with FedEx’s recent attempts to distance itself from the gun lobby, the internal company document obtained by ThinkProgress outlines in great detail precisely how FedEx has secretly agreed to bend its own rules on gun shipments for powerful forces in the gun industry, including all major gun manufacturers and the NRA itself.

The document, labeled “Confidential information. Internal use only,” was provided to ThinkProgress by a FedEx employee, who asked to remain anonymous due to concern that disclosing the document would cause the source to be terminated.
