A BBC investigation has revealed some agency drivers delivering for Amazon drive dangerously because of pressure to finish their rounds on time. An undercover reporter worked long hours for one of the many agencies supplying Amazon with drivers and earned an amount equivalent to less than the minimum wage. President-elect Donald Trump’s promises to take U.S. trade policy in a new and radically different direction has created uncertainty for major companies whose businesses rely on moving goods across borders, as well as American workers who depend on trade for their livelihood.
“Attempts to protect U.S. manufacturers through renegotiating free-trade agreements may backfire, by hampering global supply chains and export markets,” Morgan Stanley wrote in a note published Wednesday.
- A new University of Washington research center, the UW Urban Freight Lab, is working with shipper United Parcel Service, retailers Costco and Nordstrom, and the Seattle Department of Transportation to study urban product delivery challenges.
- The lab (part of the University of Washington’s Supply Chain, Transportation and Logistics department) was founded to analyze last-mile delivery in urban areas, including management of streets and parking for delivery trucks, bicycles, pedestrians and cars, according to the school’s news service.
United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) and FedEx (NYSE:FDX) have suspended pickups and deliveries in areas impacted by Hurricane Matthew.
The Category 3 storm, which claimed the lives of hundreds of people in Haiti, is traveling up the eastern coast of Florida and is projected to hug the coastlines of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina over the next two days. All four states have declared states of emergency and ordered evacuations in coastal areas.
