Did UPS and FedEx Get a Bum Rap for Holiday Delays? – Forbes

It was the carriers who suffered the brunt of the criticism, but many of the tardy deliveries weren’t their fault, according to Jerry Hempstead, who spent decades as an executive with DHL and Airborne Express, and now heads up his own firm, Hempstead Consulting. He blamed the severe snowstorm that struck large portions of the South and East, including UPS’s hub in Louisville, KY and FedEx’s in Memphis, Tenn., for much of the delay.

There’s a limit to how many extra people and equipment can be crammed into the system. The problem, said Hempstead, is that many e-tailers are unrealistic about the ability of carriers to fulfill delivery commitments, especially when a large part of the country is paralyzed by a storm. The big online merchants have access to detailed information about conditions in various regions, and could inform consumers that certain areas will be subject to delays — just as UPS and FedEx make exceptions in cases of bad weather. But competition among sellers is so fierce that no one wants to lose prospective buyers by telling them the truth.

O’Toole demands refunds for N.J. customers whose Christmas packages were delayed – NJ.com

It’s not enough that Amazon has promised customers impacted by late deliveries from United Parcel Service and FedEX $20 gift cards and refunds on shipping charges, said State Sen. Kevin O’Toole (R-Bergen).

This morning the senator sent letters to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, FedEx and UPS explaining why he thinks each of the carriers should step up to refund shipping charges on packages that were unexpectedly delayed ahead of Christmas.

UPS glitches could boost U.S. delivery competition – Yahoo

UPS scrambled on Thursday to deliver packages that had failed to arrive in time for Christmas as the No. 1 U.S. ground delivery service sought to limit the fallout from the delays.

The lag in deliveries – which triggered intense criticism on social media – could encourage eCommerce companies, like online retail giant Amazon, to spread their shipping contracts across more companies to lower risk.

UPS driver: ‘Worst Christmas ever’ for delivery – USA Today

Social media exploded on Christmas with complaints about UPS and FedEx from customers furious about empty spots under their trees.

Most complaints were directed at UPS, which issued statements on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas Day acknowledging that the company was overwhelmed by unexpected volume and some packages were delayed until after the holiday.

“This has been the worst Christmas ever,” said Larry Ledet, 55, of Houston, who has been a UPS driver for 27 years. He made 337 stops and delivered 505 packages Monday.

Tech At UPS, FedEx Focuses On Humans – Yahoo

While Amazon.com (AMZN) got a lot of press this month talking up future delivery by drones — and FedEx makes some fun of that — FedEx and United Parcel Service are trucking ahead with ways to optimize human drivers.

Both UPS and FedEx are gung-ho on improving processes via automation and data crunching. A big chunk of it is about streamlining the delivery path so drivers can do more per minute and mile. They’re also exploring electric trucks and other alternative-fuel vehicles.

Humans remain integral to the shipping business, but analyst Becker points out that UPS and FedEx are “far more automated” than they once were and are delivering “more packages with fewer people” per package.
