Comparing blacks to Italians, Irish and other ethnic groups when it comes to immigration history and success at "picking yourself up" conveniently overlooks some key facts. 1. The Italians and Irish came here by choice. Blacks didnt. 2. Italians and Irish were legally classified as human beings with constitutional rights when they arrived here. Blacks werent. 3. Italians and Irish arrived here as family groups and tended to stick together and help one another. Black families were seperated and sold off, with fathers going to one owner and mothers and children to another. When you apply a world wide perspective to this issue, the lesson throughout history that becomes clear is that when one race or culture subjugates and conquers another, it can take generations for the damage to be undone. Look at how poorly the Native Americans have "assimilated" to the white-imposed way of life that was forced upon them on the reservations. Look at how poorly the aboriginal peoples have done in other nations (Australia, or the various European colonies in Africa for example) that have been conquered by force and then ultimately "freed" by the conqueror. I'm aware that progress has been made, I'm aware that we now have a black President, and I'm aware of the power of free will and personal responsibility. All I am saying is that when you subjugate and dehumanize an entire race for generations, that race isnt suddenly going to just "pick themselves up" and act the way you think they ought to according to your timeable.
