Amazon.com Inc. said it’s axing plans to build a new corporate campus in New York City, bowing to fierce opposition from some residents and politicians and denying the city what the mayor and governor had called its biggest ever economic win.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio lobbied hard to bring the deal to the city, with the governor even jokingly offering to change his name. They touted the promise of as many 40,000 jobs in the city over the next two decades with an average salary of $150,000.

Well considering the average pay was to be 150k you figure many would move up from other lower paying jobs.

This low unemployment should now start to lead to employers offering higher wages. This is a good thing.

I’ve been to the area Amazon proposed it site location. You’ve got to hump it in from a few subways/buses farther out in Queens or Long Island to get there. Long Island City area is astronomical rent and costs.

After the Foxcom Wisconsin scam was exposed and the negative public reaction to it perhaps it as much as what any New York politician had to say about the matter is what impacted Amazon's decision to pull out of NYC. There is a clearly growing pattern of highly touted and highly publicly subsidized projects of this nature not living up to their promises the hype or the scale of the proposed project . I admire the courage on the part of some public officials who instead of rolling over and sucking up to powerful business interests call in to question the full impact of such projects based on a broader assessment rather than simply an estimated number of jobs created which more often than not is wildly exaggerated.

Amazon has several warehouses with thousands of jobs on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro area. Whatever else they are, a person can always find a job there if nowhere else. At $15hr they start at more than most local jobs. People slam Amazon but they provide a fantastic service and in many regions of the country much needed work.

Amazon said they would have brought that area $10 Billion in tax revenue over the next 20 years. That's why you give that kind of company $3 Billion in incentives.
