Believe it or not, many powerful Americans of christian persuasion pushed for the creation of Israel in 1948 due to self fulfillment of prophecy. Somewhere in the Bible, there might be a verse or two that implies or states that Israel must be a nation again before the the 2nd coming of Christ.  Obviously , some christians( including many of the religious right christian/republicans)  feel with the continued existence of Israel , there is no stumbling block to Mr. J.C. coming back. This is part of the reason why Israel came into existence and why it enjoyed much support from Republicans and from some Democrats. Please note that I said part of the reason.
