Is going to your wife's/baby's ultrasound (the one where you find out the gender) a justifiable reason to call in if getting the day off was not an option?

Just call in and explain the situation. Don't give out too much information. Just say you need to take your wife to the doctors.

I guess I really didn't think a doctor would say that my presence was "medically necessary"
All you need is proof of that there was a Doctor's appointment. Doesn't matter if you were needed there or not, it's your child.

I didn't really understand why I needed to be there until my wife had a miscarriage and I was too worried about not making the bosses mad instead of being at her doctors appointment.
