What you're leaving out is that not all Israelis can own weapons even if they pass those tests. Only people who have served in the military for two years are allowed to own guns in Israel. So basically only the government and people sworn to protect it can have weapons. Our nation is founded on a fear of government. I personally think that fear is justified. Our "right" to bear arms is specifically written into a list of limits on the power of government. The rights to freedom of speech, religion, bearing arms, and most importantly, privacy..... They all come with serious negative consequences, but these rights are necessary none the less. I'm all for background checks, but mental testing is putting way too much faith in the ever evolving medical field of mental health. A couple decades ago homosexuality was considered a mental illness. You can't point to someone who has a family history, or genetic disposition to mental illness, and forbid them from owning a gun. You can't have one doctor making that kind of decision based on a few minutes "testing" someone. If someone commits a crime because of a mental illness, that's a different story. Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Ben
