This president inherited the biggest economic mess since the great depression. On the night of his inauguration, the Republican establishment held a meeting to start planning how to block his every move. Mitch McConnell has overseen the largest number of filibusters in the history of the United States. In March of 2009, the stock market bottomed out at around 6500. Just checked the Dow, it's at 13,618. The Fortune 500 is sitting on 2 trillion dollars in cash that they have no intention of putting back into the economy. Income inequality is at the highest since the Gilded Age. Middle class wages have been flat or declining since Ronald Reagan, while worker productivity is at an all time high. The people who do the work are not sharing in the fruits of their labor. In every state where the GOP took over in 2010, workers' rights are under attack (not just public sector unions; Right to Freeload legislation aimed at private sector unions as well.); women's health and welfare is under attack, and business cronies are rewarded with tax cuts and other breaks. We are well on our way to a plutocracy. All the wealth that has been created in the last 30 years has basically been sucked upward to the 1%. The Democratic Party is beholden to big money almost as much as the GOP, but they at least try to maintain environmental standards and some protections for working people. From his first year in office, when he ordered the SEALS to kill the Somali pirates holding hostages, to the raid on Osama Bin Laden, to a sensible redirection of our military approach to the war on terrorists, this President has engaged in a robust foreign policy, the lies of the right wing notwithstanding. I cast my first vote as an adult for Richard Nixon. I was a loyal Republican voter until the party was hijacked by the Christian Dominionists and the flat out crazies like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann. Those people flat out scare me. Is President Obama perfect? No. Is the Democratic Party perfect? No. But I have eyes to see and a brain to evaluate, and when I look at what the GOP has DONE, not talked about, DONE in states where they have taken over lock, stock, and barrel, they scare me. Mitt Romney is the BEST candidate the GOP could dredge up this year, and he is hopeless. So, THAT is why I am voting for President Obama in 7 weeks.
