Backlogs are created when there are not enough people hired to do the work, or there are catastrophic events. If they want to be proactive, hire college kids now,for start in September, train them on the weekends, throw them some cash, and vroom, when they are on break you got a work force temporarily. Let the staff work some holidays and weekends training people since most, and I do say most, not all have never worked a weekend or over 8 hours in their life. Not operations people, staff people. Let the air drivers deliver all air, on many different routes, free up the driver to get to the meat of the delivery day. Surely if one has a drivers license they could drive sprints to meet points. They could have bulk stops scanned and ready for delivery at a meet point, leaving people who know how to deliver do it fast. Its not like it would cost UPS billions to have some temps available for the holiday. I know there could be some conflicts with the contract, but having one work a holiday should be one and it does not seem to be a big deal, the union will not be working, I am sure. Having them learn how to correct an address, or answer phone calls, and leave the operations to the "experts". Hell if they can implement Orion, on the whole work force at least give us a break somewhere. They have wrung the rag to as dry as it will be. There is no meat left on the proverbial bone. Costs money to make money, spend it UPS.
