Michael Osterholm, the director of the National Institute for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, said on the Joe Rogan podcast in March 2020 that masks are not effective in stopping transmission of influenza like illnesses like covid, and likely increase the transmission of disease because of improper use, face touching, and reusing of the same mask without proper washing between uses. The guy quoted a handful of studies, but literally all of the over 50 studies by over 20 different countries over the last 25 years came to the same conclusion (except for a few pushed out by china in the last year). So either the entire global scientific and medical community conspired to hide how effective masks are at stopping flu like illnesses, working together over the past 25 years to all come up with similar results to their tests (2%~ reduction in viral sized particles, any positive effect outweighed by face touching and improper mask use)- Or the entire global scientific community is so gloriously inept that even well established, peer reviewed studies forming scientific consensus over decades cannot be trusted. People pointing to quack studies, not peer reviewed or posted in trusted scientific journals, to support mask mandates deserve all of the ridicule they get. But unfortunately most people don’t know how to tell a good study from a bad one, and just read the headline “study shows Blahblahblah” and accept it as fact without any closer look.
