They were called Indians because Columbus thought he had landed in India when he first crossed the Atlantic. And to describe Indians in India that way is absolutely farcical. They were so savage that the Portuguese then the British colonized them and India was known as the Jewel in the Crown to the British. They made huge money with Indian trade. Don't know what you're reading, but some Native American tribes were very savage while others weren't. But the ones who fought settlers primarily were fighting to protect their lands. There is example after example.of women and children taken into captivity and the women made wives and the children raised as their.own. Brutal things were done on both sides. They massacred settlers on a few occasions, and we massacred whole villages too. And our government repeatedly broke treaties signed with.the various tribes. By the way at the time of Columbus there were approximately 500 different tribes in what is now the U.S. Many different languages, many different cultures. Cannibalism? The Caribs of the Caribbean (named after them) were known for it. Can you name.other cannibalistic tribes? Some did some very brutal things. The Apaches were known for it. Do you know why Geronimo went on the warpath? We could go on and on all day.
