Oh, I'm with you on that. I was 10 years in at that point. Had a wife and a two year old at home, and had just bought a house a couple years earlier. Nervous as hell. But I sure as sh#t wasn't crossing that picket line. No amount of nervous was going to get me to cross. I'd go broke first. I was actively looking for other work had the strike gone on any longer. After witnessing firsthand what happens to those that cross, I'd highly recommend that if anyone is thinking about it...DON'T. Your work life will be miserable. Even more miserable than UPS work life already is, if you can imagine that...lol. The writing was on the wall for a while prior to that strike, I could see it was more than likely going to happen. So I did start squirreling away as much money as I could spare. In addition, in March, I scheduled 3 weeks of vacation starting the first week of Aug '97. My birthday is July 30, so got off Wednesday the 30th and day after, and took a floater for the Friday. Then vacation kicked in. I was away on vacation when the strike hit August 4th. Actually cut my trip short to come home to picket. Vacation checks were cut 2 weeks in advance of your vacation back then, so the money was already in the bank when the strike hit. It basically eliminated any hit I would have taken to my bank account as the strike was over before I was to be back to work, luckily. I always took that first week in August as vacation going forward, but never again did I feel the need to do the three week thing again at contract time. I retired in 2018, so I'm a little out of the loop as to the feeling of strike or no strike this time. Prepare accordingly people!
