It used to be everyone said to get rid of it because the person who won the popular vote always won the college. Now people are claiming it exists to stop demagogues like Trump. Both are wrong. It exists because the USA is a union of independent states and the states should have a voice in the leader of the federal government. The number of electors is based on population as is reflected in the House of Representatives. The weird part is that there are actual people that cast the vote. Just give states their electoral votes, why is there this second step of people casting ballots as electors? It's silly.</p></blockquote><p></p>
