My story is completely different. I was able to finish my 4 year degree (Business Administration) and earned 9 hours toward my master's (Human Resources) while on active duty. As I approached the end of my current enlistment I had a choice to make-----re-up or separate from service. My ex came from a military family and she did not want our kids to move all over the world so we decided to separate (from both the military and each other). During the last 6 months of my enlistment I began sending out resumes-----yes, back then we actually sent out resumes to prospective employers----and did not receive anything beyond the "yeah, we got your resume" response letter. We moved back to her hometown, I called a friend who I had been stationed with there and he told me to come up to UPS as they were hiring. 30 years later I retired. Do I wish that I could have used my degree? Absolutely but I also had a young family to help support and needs took priority over wants. I enjoyed my career and between my ex and I we were able to raise two wonderful children who got everything that they needed (if not everything that they wanted). Both are very successful in their respective fields---one is married to a hard working man and they have two children while my son is engaged to a wonderful young lady and they have one child. I have immersed myself in to my new career as a tax preparer while doing all that I can to enjoy my retirement.
