Of course we do. And who is paying for them? Our "empire" isn't. I've already pointed out, and you obviously weren't paying attention, that part of our dollar becoming the reserve currency, and our becoming one of the two superpowers in the world in the 50's, was we keep sea lanes open for commerce. We aren't out there keeping our boot on everyone's neck. It's an odd love affair you have with the U.S. if you think we're the world's bully. The British Empire sent British citizens to run the various countries they conquered. Those citizens were at the top of the social pyramid in those countries. There's a line in the movie "Ghandi" where Ghandi says "100,000 British can't control 350 million Indians if they choose to not be controlled." For about 100 or so years the British did just that. And to dozens of countries. That was the greatest empire in history. What we've done in comparison is open and develop markets, and protected them from ideologies that threatened capitalism. For a dominating, do as I say empire we've sure let much smaller, weaker countries get the better of us in trade. More like sold down the river by our leaders. Some empire.
