Another aspect to that debaucle was the mission was micromanaged from the top and we did not have enough aircraft planned for the mission. One mechanical failure was enough to cause us to abort the mission. the crash happened after the abort was already called. He tried to sit on his hands he was anti war which is ok, but public opinion over the hostage embarrassment forced him to act , he then tried to control the mission by limiting the mission to a degree that did not allow enough equipment to do the job. In hindsight i think its good we aborted because this mission was a suicide mission at best. We didnt have the capabilities to do this and could have easily lost the approximate 150 troops we were going to put at risk . We did not have any significant assets in the area for a rescue if this mission had gone bad. agreed , i do think the hostage situation over rode any anti war sentiments at the time. People will generally support a military action if its intent is to save americans. as an early member of what was then the newly forming "rapid deployment force" I can tell you that we were still trying to figure out how to do this type of mission. We didnt have the long range helicopters we needed nor the helicopters to fly through desert sand storms and the mission was very high risk. This was a joint forces mission and there was a lot of military politics in the process that affected the planning. Despite five months of preparation for this mission the different branches were still learning how to work together in this type of mission.
