The White House recognizes new UPS registered apprenticeship program – UPS

What’s new: UPS tractor-trailer driver Kevin Byrnes attended a White House event on expanding and improving trucking jobs Monday, April 4.

“An email comes in from the White House with a fancy invitation and it says ‘the President requests your presence,’” Kevin said. “It was just so humbling. Made me proud to be an American and to be a truck driver.”

Who is Kevin: The New Jersey resident is an America’s Road Team Captain, a distinction he earned Jan. 18 through the American Trucking Associations (ATA). As a Captain, he travels the country to talk safety and to teach about the industry.

“What an honor to be at the people’s house representing the ATA, America’s Road Team, the Teamsters, UPS and truck drivers in general,” Kevin said. “Putting us out there like this showed people a great career choice they might not be thinking of.”

UPS Healthcare: getting patient-critical products where they need to be – Post and Parcel

UPS Healthcare is expanding its cold chain capabilities in Hungary to support distribution throughout Central & Eastern Europe

As part of its global expansion strategy, UPS Healthcare has recently completed several significant investments in Hungary to offer customers faster shipping times and greater flexibility as they look to grow their businesses in existing and new markets.

These investments include the addition of 13,000m2 of state-of-the-art warehousing space to its hub near Budapest. Housing multiple validated temperature-controlled environments for a variety of temperature-sensitive medicines and biologics, this expansion means that UPS Healthcare’s campus has 37,000m2 of dedicated Healthcare space in the country.

The additional warehouse space is complemented by a growing fleet of temperature-controlled vehicles which serve 32 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the launch of UPS Premier, a new service that prioritizes and tracks critical shipments to within 3 meters of their location anywhere in UPS’s global network.

New UPS e-bikes are turning heads in the UK – UPS

What’s new: With a fleet of electric-assist eQuad bikes taking to the streets in London, UPS is pilot testing new ways to serve customers while reducing carbon footprint and traffic congestion.

The big picture: These four-wheeled electric-assist cycles developed by Fernhay allow the operator to use cycle lanes and easily move through narrow streets and dual-use pedestrian zones. They’re the latest leap forward in UPS’s use of innovative solutions and advanced technology to operate more sustainably.

Why it’s needed: Last-mile deliveries via cycle support a more sustainable way to deliver in dense urban environments and navigate zero-emission zones.

“The bikes are a great way to beat traffic in urban areas and to deliver to addresses that are harder to reach by a traditional package car,’’ said George Dann, a UPS e-cycle operator in London. “People stop me on the street to ask questions. They’re a real hit when I’m on the road.”

Barge service from New Bedford could solve UPS’ SSA reservation problem – The Inquirer and Mirror

A New Bedford company could come to the rescue of UPS, which missed last fall’s deadline for Steamship Authority truck reservations to Nantucket, losing out on dozens of ferry spaces it normally books to transport packages to the island.

41 North Offshore LLC is seeking a license from the SSA to make up to 70 freight runs to the island between mid-May and mid-October, with each barge carrying three tractor-trailers. UPS has already contacted the company about transporting its trucks, according to the 41 North license application to the Steamship Authority.

In order to accommodate UPS’ lack of reservations, the boat line is offering the shipper the remaining available space on its Nantucket ferries, and prioritizing UPS trucks on its wait-lists, SSA general manager Bob Davis said late last month.
