Once, when United Parcel Service CEO Carol Tomé was reflecting on leadership earlier in her career, she said, “It is easy to get focused on you, but that is the wrong place to put your energy.”
If you are a leader, she said, the focus should be on your team.
Tomé has just been named this year’s recipient of the The Four Pillar Award, one of metro Atlanta’s top honors for regional leadership. It comes almost three years after she retired from a nearly 25-year career at The Home Depot (NYSE: HD). In 2020, she took over as the head of UPS. True to form, after receiving the leadership accolade, she focused the lens on the delivery giant’s 534,000 employees, saying in a statement they “move our world forward.”
The Council for Quality Growth, a trade organization that advocates for responsible economic development across the Atlanta region, will present the award to Tomé in October. Council for Quality Growth President and CEO Michael Paris said in a statement Tomé is a “true testament to corporate responsibility and visionary leadership.”
