Baltimore Cops’ Attorneys Say Prosecutors Withheld Evidence Of Freddie Gray ‘Crash-For-Cash’ Scams

Prosecutors in the office of Baltimore city state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby directed police investigators to withhold evidence from the attorneys for the six cops charged in the Freddie Gray case that the 25-year-old had a history of taking part in “crash-for-cash” scams carried out in order to obtain legal settlements.

That’s according to a motion filed by the officers’ attorneys on Thursday. According to The Baltimore Sun, the attorneys obtained the information from witnesses for the prosecution.

If true, Gray’s scheme and prosecutors’ withholding of potentially exculpatory evidence would be the latest blow to Mosby’s case against the cops.

According to The Sun, assistant state’s attorney Janice Bledsoe instructed a city police investigator to “not do the defense attorneys’ jobs for them” by providing information that Gray has taken part in a scam to obtain settlements from the police department.

The new filing adds to one the attorneys submitted last week claiming that prosecutors knew that Gray had tried to injure himself while in police custody in the past.

Sgt. Alicia White and Officer William Porter, two officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray, filed suit May 2 against Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby and Maj. Sam Cogen of the Baltimore Sheriff’s office for defamation and invasion of privacy. The suit alleges Mosby and Cogen knew the charges were trumped up, but filed them anyway to quell the riots that had ravaged the city.
Michael Glass, the lawyer for the officers in the suit, told TheDCNF that he plans to amend the lawsuit to include “likely a count of malicious prosecution, false arrest, false imprisonment, violation of the Maryland declaration of rights, article 24 and 26.” He said the they’re currently working on modifying the complaint, and the changes will be official in the next few weeks, likely by the end of June.

With 344 murders, last year was the bloodiest year in the City of Baltimore’s history. But as 2016 reaches its halfway point, the bloodshed seems to be showing no signs of stopping.
Thus far, the town once called “Charm City” has suffered 114 deaths, mostly a result of gang warfare.

Now that summer has pretty much begun, the murder rate is ticking up as well. In the last week of May alone, an incredible twelve murders were committed in the city.

As Salt Lake City’s KUTV reported on April 21, the murder rates in Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington D.C. drove the higher national murder rate in 2015.

This year is following closely the dangerous pattern seen last year. Baltimore’s per capita murder rate in 2015 was the worst the city has ever recorded. Even though there were more murders by body count in 1993 (353 were murdered then as compared to the 344 in 2015) the population of the city in 1993 was much higher than that of today.
