Closest thing I can think of are old iron furnaces that made wrought iron in mid 1800's.

Like this one.

There used to be a lot of them but now mostly just ruins.

Eureka! I found info on it. They used to be charcoal furnaces that were converted to lime kilns.

Back in the day they would cook limestone until it popped releasing lime. They would clear cut lumber until they ran out , then move on.
