I think it’s the extreme approach they take to education
Had a family I went to school with. 4 kids all seemed really smart. None ever amounted to much. Truth was they just spent about 5x the time on school work as everyone that had a life.

Its cultural. Kids learn about importance of education and studying at home. Or maybe they don't.
When so many kids who graduate from high school are functionally illiterate and then have their own kids what kind of home environment would you expect?

The valedictorian at my daughter’s school was from Pakistan. The girl had a 4.5 GPA. She also had no social life whatsoever. Her life was dedicated to studying and nothing else. My daughter graduated with a 3.7 GPA and a very full social life.

I've seen some actual videos of people getting stoned to death (good ol internet) and it looks like a horrible way to die.

That’s what happened to her Korean friend. His mother was obsessively protective of him. Poor boy. If he went with friends anywhere, you can bet she was there somewhere watching. One of the other parents had to talk her into letting him go to the senior prom with a girl. She chaperoned the prom.
He went to college about four hours away and he parties all the time except when she goes there to check on him. Fortunately, he met other Korean boys there who understand. Lol.
