He stayed on for a bit I believe. Lots of stories. He also boxed afterward as a sparring partner. He claimed to have sparred with Jake LaMotta once or twice. He said LaMotta fought dirty.

I had many uncles that served, one who was on a mine sweeper in the Mediterranean that was sunk, 3 days floating until rescued. Another in a B-24 that was heavily damaged over Germany, finally had to bail out over England. Those men never complained, they just did what had to be done. God bless them all.
