Bye Bye for now....Amazon

Amazon opened a distribution center 1 state over from us last year about this time. A month ago, they started diverting volume to the PO that can meet 2 day delivery in my area. There have been some hiccups, but we are down and most of that is a decrease in Amazon residential volume.

In the meantime, the local POs are complaining that many of their carriers have to double and triple trip because all the parcels do not fit in their vehicles.

In the meantime, I have delivered packages to the PO from Target that weighed over 20 lbs.

What happened to the size limits on surepost?

Had a customer approach me the other day about an Amazon delivery she got from a guy in regular clothes driving a beat up car. It made her very uncomfortable. I explained that it was Lazership and that Amazon is farming out some of their deliveries to them to save money. She wasn't happy and I don't see how Amazon doesn't see that it doesn't put them in the best light.

I haven't had any Amazon delivered by UPS in months. Ever since they opened a building in Pittsburgh, it's all going there, then to my local post office.

I've been an Amazon Prime member for a few years now. I remember a couple years back, most if not all of my packages came through UPS. Thanks s year most of my 2nd day packages came through USPS. Next day & same day came through OnTrac. I only remember 1 UPS package last month.

Thanks,

We lost a total volume of 2,500 packages/day since Amazon started using the USPS and supposedly they own delivery system.
You mean since giving the volume to the post office with the sure post program???yep we are going to let our own guys get laid off while the postal carriers are working everybody and in some places hiring more carriers....it's bs!!I wonder what would happen if the post office started giving ups and FedEx all of their parcels to deliver, do you really think that the different postal unions would sit back and let that happen... I really doubt it!

Some of this volume has been lost to the sure post program....the post office is hiring because of sure post and smart post while our guys will be sitting at home after Christmas with no work!!!real fair

My hub gets a ton of Sierra trading post!!
Which is also a new smart post customer....I hope this is addressed in the next contract because it is being abused by ups 1000%....we use to see sure post packages kicked back to ups to deliver if there was another stop on a street...now a sure post package is only delivered by ups IF IT IS ONLY GOING TO THE SAME ADDRESS AS A REGULAR UPS PKG. I also have been seeing larger pkgs going to the post office and regular ground packages that aren't even sure post labeled...

Unfortunately this volume is about all ups has left to deliver to residential customers since most of the rest of the b2c volume besides a few selected shippers have been diverted to sure post...and some of these accounts aren't the large Amazon and target accounts...we are seeing smaller business's being converted to sure post something that wasn't happening at this pace or level a few years ago..

Then maybe they should stop shipping 50 pound bags of dog food in flimsy boxes with a single piece of tape.
It's called being left with the scraps while the post office is given the majority of ups work. The union did a lousy job with this probably because ups has been hiring the last couple of years and the thought process has been focused on getting more drivers hired and not what's going to happen when in 5 years old he post office will be handling 50% of ups small 10 lb or less parcels...hell maybe they are already doing that percentage ...who knows... I'm sure the union doesn't

You don't understand.

The union did what it had to in order to try and keep jobs.

Without Surepost, we would not see any of this volume under 10 pounds. It would be going straight to the USPS or to FedEx and their Smartpost.

At least we now pick it up, sort it, deliver it to the center and then deliver it to the USPS.

This retains quite a few jobs. Without it, sort jobs and feeder jobs would be lost. It does cost some package jobs, but they would be gone anyway if this volume went straight to the USPS or FedEx.

If the union took a stand to end Surepost, the volume and jobs would leave with it.

Amazon and other companies want cheaper deliveries than us or FedEx.

You can blame the government for allowing the USPS to retain the biggest monopoly in the world. First Class Mail.

But that is not the problem in and of itself.

The problem is that the USPS is using revenue from its monopoly on First Class Mail to subsidize its package delivery and deliver cheaper than us or FedEx.

Don't blame the union, blame the government for allowing the USPS to do this.

Please excuse me for being an idiot, but what is "smart post"? Is it the same as "sure post"? What is "sure post"?

SurePost is a service that uses UPS for sorting, transit, and delivery to USPS. USPS handles the last mile delivery to residences instead of a PC driver.

SmartPost is just the FedEx version SurePost.

At least UPS is getting in on some of that surepost action. The more that these companies are giving free shipping, the more services like surepost, smartpost will be used.

I think the problem here is this idea of "free shipping".
Retailers over-promise, then find any way to cut costs.
This is why we have sure-post. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as free, and sure post is the bastard child.

I tend to get a lot of heavy amazons boxes through out the week and a lot of smaller ones on Wednesday and Friday. Probably because the local usps cannot handle it.
