My point is, a major contributor pulling out of an adequately funded fund could destabilize it. Therefore creating a future liability greater than the 16K annual obligation per FT employee.
Employers who pull out of a pension fund are supposed to pay their unfunded liability before doing so.
UPS has an unfunded liability of $3.2B which they would have to pay if they were to pull us out of the Upstate NY Teamsters Pension Fund. Rumor is that they are considering this and would most likely spread their liability over 10-20 years.
UPS pays 76% of the total contributions per month to our fund. Pulling out would basically leave the fund in complete disarray.
