yes, some folks use Styrofoam or even Gized metal. I use a 48 qt igloo ice chest and add a brass spigot for drainage.

In addition to the ice chest, I also put sheets of almost 2" thick Styrofoam sheets on all 6 sides. Ice will stay in these things 3--4 days during a Texas summer.

I'm not sure that would be a good idea. Maybe for a group of old foggies but definitely not for a bunch of drunks which seems to be required bon-fire prota call. It definitely wouldn't be safe for the type of bon-fires I have.
