Full time car washer/porter questions.

I have been working for UPS for about 1.5 years so far. I got hired in as a full time porter/car washer when they eliminated the part time porter and part time car washer positions. I am not a teamster, i am a member of the IAM union.
My questions are,
1. What is the pay progression of this job?
2. What is the top rate?
3. Can I ever become a driver/would it be worth it?

Thank you in advance for any answers.

To be the man, you gotta beat the man.
Never heard of that position, you may be able to be considered an outside hire, but don't quote me on that. I know supervisors and certain specialist positions are able to be drivers that way. I think it's one for every six union employee, at least for my area. I could be completely wrong though.

The previous PT car washer became a driver through the outside hire. But I'm not so much worried about that right now as much as where this position could take me because I really like the job, just the money isn't the greatest right now. And I want to know if I should consider driving if the opporitunity comes up.

Our washers make $15 an hour and the cars look the same as when we bring em in. Makes me proud to pull up to my first stop with a crappy looking car.

Our washers are 22.3 jobs and they have to spend most of their time doing other things with little time left to wash vehicles. Washing is the lowest priority of their duties.

Be sure not to fill up the truck for no reason and not tell anyone. That seems to be part of the job. And yea, never bother to brush off the back of truck before going through the wash. You are much too busy for that.

I work at a small center with about 35 total trucks. So everything is washed by hand. I do plenty of other things besides washing too, so they get washed when I get a minute in between everything else.

I assume that you are 22.3, and therefore have a 3 yr progression, if 1 1/2 years in you should be getting 18.75 with top rate of 26 and change plus yearly raises, I believe.

You can move into PC whenever a bid open up and have high seniority on bid list. that would increase your pay $6, but with more stress and hassle. Only you can determine if it is worth the aggravation.

Not a Teamster. Art. 22.3 would not apply. I believe the only way he could get a package car job would be as an off the street hire.

What 'other things?'. I'm not sure you should be moving boxes, not being a Teamster.

The drivers back the cars into the building. When they are unloaded I park them outside to make room for others coming in. When they are all in and unloaded I put them all back in the lineup in the right order. I also check and top off oil in the cars and move feeders as needed. When everyone is finally in I have just enough time to spot the lineup before my shift is over. Washing happens between all of that.

In my building...a car washer and a porter are two seperate positions...both are teamster jobs though.
They are in my building also. Art. 22 FT inside job. I believe by contract the number of jobs cannot be eliminated. We have one porter (ex feeder) over 70 and collecting Social Security and making $30.70/hr.

You are right----by contract the number of jobs cannot be eliminated; however, that doesn't mean that they can't be moved to other facilities as needed.
