And in an agrarian society where everyone is being fed from fields they work, and the amount and quality of possessions varied little among most, there wasn't a reason to be poor. Doesn't mean you'd be rich, just means you have enough in that setting. You want a car, a cellphone, a big screen tv, excellent food, a big house, nice clothes, nice vacations, and consider yourself poor if you don't have all of the above, then you're going to have poor.
