Diamond market is controlled by a monopoly that creates artificial scarcity to keep prices high.
They say diamonds are rare but just in the U.S. alone most married women have a diamond engagement ring. And every town of any size has at least one jewelry store loaded with diamonds. Where they're useful, and I suspect that's the reason he brought them up, is you can transport a lot of wealth covertly. No bank records, no cash that can be confiscated, no detecting them crossing borders.
