UPS makes enough money just selling a service. Why add all the headaches of inventory, warehousing & all the other problems that go with it.

Uh. . . We are a wharehousing and shipping and receiving contractor

Diversification is good. We are not just a shipping company anymore.

I feel small package is the ugly red headed step child of UPS.

Crush Amazon? The preload does that on a regular basis.

Qvc. is a dead horse. its the 8 track tape player, in the world of digital downloads! Look at the customers who order QVC =mostly older women. Look at the customers who order from Amazon = mostly all young!

if we shut off amazon, they will just divert, to other shippers. I like your idea, but I really dont think its a good option.
Ups could start their own amazon. They could start by buying zapos and a couple other places like this. They could merge them all and dominate the whole thing.

I don't know how things are in other states, but here in Florida, our buildings are at max capacity, and UPS never seems to plan for the future. We don't have the room for extra volume, and the company doesn't seem to have any plans for growth.

I agree with Upstate on this one...I was talking to a few driver friends of mine about this the other day when we were discussing Amazon and their attempts to remove us from the equation. I said that for all we know, UPS already has wheels in motion to become a bigger online retailer than Amazon. We already make a profit on what they lose money on. To be honest, I seriously doubt UPS is worried at all about them. You can post losses for only so long before the bill is due. You're starting to see the panic in their actions. They raised the price of Prime by $20 and are trying their best to find a way to ship at a lower cost. It isn't working by the way. Eventually, investors will start to see the writing on the wall and bail if they don't start to get a positive cash flow. UPS posts profits over and over again, is solidly respected (thanks in no small part to us drivers, who are the face of UPS) and has shown in the past that when it does something, it will find a way to make it profitable or they won't do it. Our corporate bigwigs might be a bit cold-hearted at times but there is one thing that they are not...and that is foolish when it comes to money.

We've got the delivery capacity and they've got the warehouse space (maybe?). We could be what Amazon dreams of being. One stop shop/delivery service. We start selling thingamajigs online and stop giving Amazon sweetheart rates. Game over man! Who's with me?

I have been suggesting this idea of UPS BECOMING AN ONLINE RETAILER for several years.

I have posted this idea on this website and some people just don't realize (yet) how easy it would be for UPS to pull this off.

UPS could partner with stores like Best Buy and Target but WHY WOULD THEY?

Amazon is just a middleman with a warehouse, so if Amazon wants to eliminate UPS from their business equation maybe UPS SHOULD ELIMINATE AMAZON FROM THEIR ONLINE RETAIL EQUATION?

I will put my money on UPS any day over Amazon. AMAZON DOESNT KNOW HOW TO MAKE MONEY. UPS DOES.

AMAZONS STOCK VALUE WOULD DROP 20% instantly just with the ANNOUNCEMENT OF THIS IDEA BY UPS. UPS WOULD BECOME AN INSTANT THREAT TO AMAZONS BUSINESS.
UPS DID THE SAME THING TO FDX EXPRESS BY LAUNCHING AN AIRLINE.

NOW REMEMBER THIS IDEA ONLY HAPPENS IF AMAZON TRULY DOES BUILD A DELIVERY NETWORK THAT PUSHES UPS INTO A CORNER.

UPS WILL NOT JUST SIT AROUND AND WATCH AMAZON DESTROY THEIR BUSINESS.

UPS is expanding and preparing big time to avoid another peak disaster SO UPS WILL MAKE IT HARD FOR AMAZON TO SURVIVE WITHOUT UPS.

To me this seems a crazy idea. All UPS needs to do is make a phone call to Amazon and let them know that unless they cease and desist, the discount shipping will end immediately. At that point, UPS does two things: they effectively end Amazon's ability to invest in their own transportation wing and UPS suddenly makes a far greater profit per package. And while some of that volume may be diverted to FDX, I think it's safe to say that they will limit Amazon's diversion. Amazon isn't the lucrative accounts some people think they are. They are ferocious negotiators and ridiculously demanding. High maintenance, low profit. FDX isn't going to blow up their operations for them.
