My Patriot Guard group will be doing a flag line at the local VA Cemetery from 1 to 3 today for their yearly Memorial Day program. Then out to a high buck lake resort with the wife for an anniversary dinner later on. Been married 46 years today.

Doesn't look like you lined the pit with rocks or bricks. The firewood also doesn't look seasoned.

Doesn't matter if its 6 feet deep. You need to line the pit to hold the heat in. Hence why it probably wasn't done.

The main reasons to lining the pit is to retain and even out the heat. I have a lot of Samoan friends and this how they do it here on the mainland. On the Islands you don't really need to because the soil is mostly volcanic and does it naturally.
