While I would disagree with your complaint that Americans get too much vacation time (we work some of the longest hours of any dev country & have no Fed required paid leave),

I am willing to compromise by eliminating Columbus Day to give Election Day off.

See? I can be pliant.

AOC hasn't even started the job yet and she's already angling for more vacation days.

So, our standard of living improved exactly WHY between 1865 and 1970?
rising real wages. it even improved during the great depression

richard wolff says 4 things stopped that: immigration, automation, women starting to work on the job, and i forget the other 1 (probably globalization)

i would get a variety of perspectives on why real wages stopped going up.

Industrialization and controlled legal immigration!
From Wikipedia.

Illegal immigration to the United States is the unlawful entry of foreign nationals into the United States, and the remaining in the country of admitted foreign nationals after the expiration of their U.S. visas or parole documents.[1] Earlier naturalization laws were followed by the 1875 and 1882 Actsprohibiting Chinese immigrants.[2] A 1906 actrequired immigrants to learn English in order to become citizens, and a 1917 act defined aliens with a long list of undesirables, including most Asians.[3] The U.S. had otherwise nearly open borders until the early 20th century,[4][5][6] with only 1% rejected from 1890-1924.[7][8] A 1924 act established visa requirements and enacted quotas for immigrants from specific countries, especially targeting Italians and Eastern Europeans.[7][9][10]
Doesn't sound very controlled

All those Acts you listed were increasing the control on immigration ... what was your point?
The USA needed manual labor for agrarian and early industrialization needs.
Now the USA needs STEM educated immigrants.
Just because your job is unskilled doesn't mean that the preponderance of resource needs requires skilled labor.
Also, prior to 1924, the USA was not a country that provided Social programs to it's population.
If the USA were to get rid of all the costly Social Programs, the immigration needs might be different.
Look at all the problems Germany, Sweden, France, England, etc. are having by having Open Borders ... I don't think the USA wants to go down that path.
