It would appear that SCOTUS didn't want to have to issue a ruling this close to the election but could not protect Trump from the law. Instead chose it make it quite clear that Dear Leader is not above the law nor immune from prosecution.
Therefore, if he's reelected he can use the presidency to shield himself. However Nixon and Clinton tried to go that route and discovered that it didn't work as well as was hoped.

And, hopefully, our representatives in government will stop wasting taxpayer dollars with their
-at-the-wall-and-hope-it-sticks prosecutions. Actual criminal activity should be prosecuted. Those who bring baseless charges in the hopes of damaging the President should be billed with the cost of the process, along with an appropriate penalty.
