This is the mineral I found. The shininess threw me. Thought it might be galena, anthracite coal, even a different type of obsidian. But I did all sorts of tests on it to narrow it down.

I wonder if it could be a giant chunk of slag from an old refinery.

That's usually bumpy, from what I understand. This rock is about the size of a football. There were boulders the size of vw's in the area.

That was one of my thoughts as well. Could not get it to light, actually got it red hot with no ignition. It is also much harder than coal, which is around a 2 - 3 on the mohs scale, whereas this is a 6-7. I narrowed it down to a pyroxene or amphibole group mineral, which some are almost indistinguishable from one another. I settled on amphibole due to the cleavage angles.

This was the first time I had to work that hard on identfying a rock. Most of the minerals I look for and find are pretty obvious. I've known about hardness testing, but I learned a lot more about mineral identifying through this process. Even learned how to determine specific gravity.

Chert is smoother and more jasper-like. This is definitely more grainy.

I believe gold is 19 times heavier than water. Since titanium is lighter than iron, I would think it has a lower specific gravity.

Just checked, gold is 19, titanium is 4.5.
