This is spot on. The ground drivers seem to be the hardest working ones, yet they are compensated the worst. Makes no freaking sense.
Oh please. UPS drivers have performance demands placed on them that no Ground driver would put up with. Did you ever wonder why Ground guys who have plenty of experience delivering packages (many of them heavy and irregular) stick with Ground instead of heading to UPS?

It trips me out how folks talk about us UPS drivers like we have all these tough performance demands on us. If you just do your job (like I see most ground drivers doing) this job is easy. Those demands are only meant to weed out the lard butt, lazy, unmotivated people. Funny part is, even those guys manage to pass the 30 day probation period by just busting their butt during that time. Then once they are in, the union will protect their sorry behinds from most discipline that the sups can throw at them.

As for ground drivers not wanting to switch to UPS, I can understand it, but not for being scared of performance demands. They should be wary of switching because they won't immediately be a driver and will only be doing part time hub work while they wait their turn.

I'm not saying they're ducking UPS for that reason, I'm saying that UPS is a completely different world with different expectations. The Ground guys we've taken at Express, in my experience anyway, struggled with the concepts of running a route based on service commitments and productivity expectations. It's the difference between a structured environment and one that's "There's your truck and your packages, see ya when ya get back." Not knocking it, but they are different worlds.

I agree that UPS is a totally different world but we also train a lot more than what I hear they do at ground. I just think that with the work ethic I've seen with the ground drivers in my area I have no doubt that with some training they'd handle UPS driving with no problem. I mean UPS drivers come from inside the hub doing the same type of warehouse work that FedEx warehouse employees do. There is nothing more special about UPS drivers other than they happened to start off working at UPS part time and put in enough time to earn a driving position.

Anyway back to the original point. For the work those FedEx ground drivers are doing, even with less time commits and demands, I believe they should earn more than what they do.

I cant say that's the case in my city. But if they work that hard where your @ then I would encourage them to get to ups.
Do you ever compare stop counts with them?

I don't compare stop counts because I already know we have more. I'm saying they handle big bulky irregs, business bulk stops, and business pickups just like we do. Yet they get half the money we do with no benefits. I don't necessarily encourage them to join UPS but I tell them what to expect if they did make the switch. They most likely wouldn't drive for a while but if they could be patient and wait about a year doing part time work then they'd probably get a shot after that.

Funny thing is, for all the ground drivers who've asked me about UPS, the only guy to successfully leave and join the driving workforce at UPS? The freaking ontrac driver lol.
