even the NYS online manual doesn't condone riding CHiPs-style:

Don't Pair Up — Never operate directly alongside another rider. There is no place to go if you have to avoid a car or something on the road. To talk, wait until you are both stopped.

i cringe when i also see "lane splitters"

i'm rarely on a bike anymore, just too many inattentive drivers on the road talking/texting on their smartphones...

I've done lane splitting exactly twice. Years apart, and both near San Jose. Nervous times, but the only way to escape an even worse situation.
