UPS ground saturday delivery or self pickup?

Hey guys,

Need a little info on UPS ground Saturday working. I ordered something off eBay last Saturday morning (8th Mar) to my friend's address. I'm not from US, so wasn't aware of the fact that UPS won't be picking up the package till Monday. Before I could contact the seller on Monday to upgrade it to 3 day select, he told me that item has already left the warehouse.

The package is coming from NJ to Santa Clara, CA. Latest scan shows "Secaucus, NJ, United States 03/11/2014 2:09 A.M. Departure Scan" with scheduled delivery "Monday, 03/17/2014, By End of Day"

Now the problem is that my friend will be leaving US on Saturday. So, is there any way he can do a self-pickup from local UPS on Saturday assuming the package arrives to that location Friday night?

No. Trucks are sorted and loaded the day the package is scheduled to be delivered. The package may arrive Friday night but it will sit in a trailer with thousands of other packages until Monday morning.

They do run a Sunday sort there. I believe it will go to the rail yard Monday.
