In the past, wealth was more concentrated at the top than it is today. Maybe not all of the past, but most of history. Discounting 20th century America, you were either wealthy or poor throughout most of human history. Today's America and most of the industrialized world is majority middle class. The last 100 years is the only time this has ever existed.

But even in the 20th century, you had figures like Rockefeller who today would be worth $350 billion. That's Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet combined.

The top always had way more political pull than they do today. With modern communication, (internet/ social media, and other countless media sources) it has led to more power to the people.
