Mamdani is calling for a lot of things. He's not going to be able to fund everything. Tax the rich more? They move away. NYC has already lost a lot of the wealthy moving out because of taxation. Mamdani wants city run supermarkets. He'll end up with empty shelves.
when america taxed the rich in the past, did they move away or did the country thrive more than it is now?
There's a long history of when taxes got too high in some states many of the wealthy moved to low tax states. And thousands of millionaires over the years have renounced their citizenship and moved to tax haven countries. Florida has benefited greatly from the wealthy moving out of New York and other high tax states. And if Mamdani is able to get his agenda passed then expect a lot of millionaires to head to Florida and Texas.

That's not even what we're talking about. New York, both.city and state, have seen their tax base eroded by taxing so much that many of the wealthy have left. What Mamdani wants will force many more to flee. Who will pay the taxes then? NYC isn't the Federal government, they can't just print money. Why do you think Eric Adams is NYC mayor? He promised to clean up crime. So many wealthy were leaving because of how dangerous it had gotten that the NY governor and NYC mayor started, literally, begging people to stay. The taxes needed to pay for everything was leaving with.the wealthy who were leaving. The wealthy pay most of the income taxes in a progressive system. So if they leave do you think the poor will make up the difference? Good luck with that. Bad policies have consequences.
