When have I used such writings? I got out of organized religion when the final "sermon" I heard from the pulpit was nothing more than a poor disguised campaign endorsement of Ronald Reagan .

I think your prior statement about how the bible is used is correct I think you should own it.
people of faith quote parts of the bible that they find helpful to them in their lives or that they feel make a specific argument or guidance that applies to life.
people who hate religion exercise the same selectivity but do so as a negative. So they try to find stories they can mock the bible with.

we like it when you try to mock the bible because to do so you have to read some part of it.
