Alcoholism

I understand and believe alcoholism to be a disease and not a moral failure or sin. This concept and this philosophy does not originate with me. I first learned it at a rehab I attended.

Soon after, I learned that the belief that alcoholism is an illness is a core concept, philosophy, and foundational suggestion of AA and the 12 Step Program.

I have been a member of AA and have been practicing and implementing the 12 Step Program in my life since Dec 4, 1990.

Today I celebrate this day Dec 3, 1990 as the last day that I drank alcohol.

34 years ago I went to a Monday Night football game between the Niners and the Giants not knowing that my life was going to be dramatically changed.

I firmly believe that it is solely by the grace of God, as I understand God, that I report His victory over this disease, through AA, and the subsequent salvation of my soul, and access to His Spirit and Power.

It is said that the worst possible friend is one who has given up drinking. Nothing worse than a reformed alcoholic.

Congratulations! The success rate of AA is 10% or less so it takes a lot from the person to be able to keep dry. AA is a tool to help but it will take a lot more than AA to keep an alcoholic away from alcohol. You seem to be doing something right. 👍🏼

That has not been my experience. Sorry you feel that way.

Not one of my many friends has ever complained or shared negativity towards my non drinking.

They did have much to say about my drinking.

A frequent comment during my drinking days was “what is wrong with you”?

Also, AA helps daily many people to stay sober and on the path to sobriety. For those impacted by an alcoholic in their life, there is also al-anon. During a dark period in my life, they became an important weekly touch point. It was surprising and a relief to learn that the craziness is not just in your life. NA (Narcotics Anonymous) was created for those specifically being impacted by drug use.

Congrats on your sobriety. There are many things humans battle with consuming excessively. Including religion…

So you aren't one of those reformed drinkers who does nothing but preach the evils of alcohol and are basically nothing but a buzz kill for everyone you hang with? Good for you.

I know a few reformed druggies and drunks who are kinda' that way. I believe it is because drugging and drinking was some of the best times of their lives. Until it became the worst times of their lives.

I think for some that they are never truly happy ever again.

I believe you are correct in your assessment.

Nonetheless, I'd prefer that to an active drunk running amok.

No I am not.

In the “working with others“ section of the book Alcoholics Anonymous it is suggested by the program that it is important not to against drinking as an institution for the very reasons you stateed.

Thank you.
