Yeah. That way when you walk, the spores will disperse wherever you're going. If you go out for morels and don't bag them in mesh you're doing a disservice. In the pictures above you'll see purple-black dye looking stuff on the wet ones sitting on foil. Those are spores for that species.

The only way to pick is either mesh or paper. Mushrooms get old and nasty fast in pastic. Loosely closed paper bag is always best, and then treated like a food product.

Nope. A lot of school systems are starting in August. My daughter starts on the 28th. Second year they've done it. It was after Labor Day forever.
