Yes. The place I went to didn't do tandem jumps. Went through about half a day of training then jumped.

First 5 jumps were on a static line but I later did a couple of free fall jumps.

The place I went to had a girl die on her first jump. I wasn't there when it happened. If you jump enough you will have malfunctions. You just need to be ready for them. Her bad luck it happened on her first jump. Double malfunction because her Sentinel (a device that automatically deploys your reserve if you fall below a certain altitude at high enough speed) also malfunctioned.

I had a minor malfunction once. My shrouds were twisted like a single braid. I was able to spin around to clear them but thought about tossing out my reserve. Since my main chute was open I had time to think about it. After I landed they said "Oh yeah, that happens sometimes ..."
