call off policy

Why are you here? Benefits? Is it worth it? Wouldn't you rather just get more hours at your primary job?
I think 8 hours a day dealing with inmates is enough. Why would I want more hours\
6 years in and you are still an on-call employee?

You may want to re-think your life plan.
I still have seniority over one of the guys..possible two since the other guy has a dui and can't drive for ups so many years

the nearest one is an hour away...I don't mind being layed off. I work full-time at another job and have 2 kids with another on the way. The problem is why are they going after me when I'm only suppose to be working when someone is on vacation, or if the other guy has to drive. I'm always having to go in last minute when they decide to call off or take off for whatever other reasons. If I don't go in the put me as a call off but yet they have more call offs but nothing is happening to them...My wife is high risk pregnancy and we have to travel almost 2 hours to see specialist and I have to take her because she doesn't know how to drive in the city. I told them that and all they said is family is family but this is your job you have to be here...
Do you have, or have you checked into FMLA. Might be an option, at least for a while.

I tell people who call in a lot this.

I understand you have another job to pay the bills, but I don't care. You signed on to a job that is 5 days a week. Sure are there people out there willing to work 1 day a week, but I don't want to have to guess which day I'm going to need him. Then I'm going to wonder if he's going to be available too. If you can't make it work quit and stick with your other job. I'd be ticked too if you called out quite a bit, no matter what it's for.

I know it isn't what you wanted to hear. But I've gotten screwed before because the sup I took over from decided it would be nice to let a guy pick and choose his schedule. Sometimes you have to pick one or the other.

I understand what you are saying but one thing that bugs me is I was on schedule for that Tuesday and Friday but I didn't go in Tuesday because my medical emergency. They still put Tues, Wed, and Thurs as call offs even though I was only suppose to work Tuesday. Ok fine, put tuesday as a call off but I wasn't suppose to work wed and thurs so why am i getting it put as a call off just? Those are 2 additional "call offs" just because the drs note allowed until thursday?

Do you have a picture of your schedule so you can prove it? Because otherwise it's your word vs theirs. And you aren't going to win that battle even if you are right.

Interesting. I guess technically correct, but I would have put it as scheduled off if you had told me on Tuesday you weren't going to be able to make it the next 2 days.

  • I was only supposed to work Tuesday and Friday. Yes Tuesday was short notice, I wasn't expecting to have medical emergency. Like I said I'll take that as a call off. But I wasn't needed at all Wednesday and Thurday...I did go in on Friday.

Where I am those 3 days would still count as only 1 occurrence. Tell them you want to see a print out of your attendance. any consecutive call outs should only count as 1 occurrence. Even a Monday and a Friday still counts as 1

Also did they give you a verbal warning about your attendance? If not then I believe you can fight that also. Talk to your shop steward and if you don't have one be smart and contact your local asap.

I'm not trying to complain about my work situation. I'm confused about the whole drs note thing. I don't see how those 2 additional days are being counted against me when I wasn't scheduled to work. The thing I'm also confused about is the other employee doesn't get put in as a call off when he has to do over time...It was said that they couldn't use that against him since that was his primary job...shouldn't the same apply to me? I'm get notified every thursday what days i'm suppose to work but last minute I get notified that I have to work additional day because someone called off for whatever reason...why aren't they getting put off as call offs?

They just talked to me saying I was going to get warning letter in mail that if I call off again I'd get suspended and then if I call off again I'd get fired.

I agree and very good post. I used to be a manager at a chain store and I had an employee who called off every Monday which was the most important day. at first I was understanding. she was a very nice person and a good worker the rest of the week. but after the 5th straight Monday call off I had to let her go. we had a business to run.
