Apparently they're doing a better job than the for profit operations. So don't just assume that by creating a profit incentive you're going to get better results
If FedEx was a union shop they'd have gone out of business by now. They have built in costs flying most of their freight that Ground or UPS doesn't have. If not then please explain their lack of profit over the years? They started being much more profitable after they developed Ground. It's why UPS can pay like they do. I sincerely hope that they'll start paying better after combining operations but they are extraordinarily cheap bastards even if more profitable.
