17 years and almost a trillion dollars later American and NATO troops are still eating sand in Afghanistan.
US military in Afghanistan is played on so many different levels in Afghanistan. The same puppet politicians Uncle Sam props up end up most of the time double crossing Uncle Sam himself.
Then a few cigarhead generals had the bright idea of making an indigenous army for Afghans called the ANA. Alas apart from the commando regt. Most of ANA is composed of drug addicts who sometimes go back to the Taliban cause the pay is better( maybe we should give em $150 bonus).
Afghanistan has become a Hadrian's wall for America as it was for the Roman Empire.
This is what the soldiers (who never step out of bases/cities where already there is established strong US and NATO presence) will not tell you. And the media directorate of Pentagon will not show you.
The war in Afghanistan has become a leech that is slowly draining blood from the veins of America. Like its rival USSR before.
Today American generals face same situation which many prominent military commanders before them like Alexander the great, Arabs, mongols, persians, Ottomons, Russians, British, Russians again and finally US and NATO experienced i.e A STRETCHED OUT SUPPLY LINE.
Which is why Afghanistan is interestingly called the graveyard of the empires.
This supply line spans oceans and a road network through Pakistan (they used to do it for free. But after chinese tilt i.e one belt and one road initiative) to Afghanistan.
Which kinda shows the world does not like to beget war and only war. It likes investment(on the surface at least). What the American empire couldnt do with its weapons of war. The chinese are doing with slight of hand in economics. For example, they have single handedly taken over whole economic dynamic of Sri Lanka for next 100 years. You dont get to hear about that on CNN do ya??
Cost of deploying one US soldier to Afghanistan is almost $2 million. That includes his MREs, ammo, water, diapers(yes diapers hehe) etc etc. Whereas, the Afghan Taliban(popularly seen as freedom fighters by indigenous population) only has equipment worth $200 at most.
The Taliban are gaining more and more land mass and establishing writ over majority of the areas of country where the US and NATO expeditionary forces dont want to go into.
Taliban are like the hydra cut off one head. 3 pop up in its place. The US soldiers have cutting edge tech, ISR, CAS, exceptional training, best equipment, more education etc etc etc. But is lacking in one aspect i.e RESOLVE and is fearful of losing his life. Albeit he has the sentiment of looking out for the man next to him. But if you really really peel off the onion and peek into his core he is fighting a war that he does not believe in(or he started out believing it but it semmed a lost cause with every passing day). In short he has no resolve, and no CLEARLY DEFINED objectives from his superior commanders(is he supposed to help these people and kill them at the same time?? Or he is just plain supposed to kill them??), HE IS NOT A LOCAL who is born and bred in Afganistan and does not know the ins and outs of Afghan lifestyle/society.
Whereas, the Afghan Taliban/freedom fighter(again terrorist of one, hero of another) is determined, he has resolve(they held out for 18 years with mere Klashnikovs), is not shy of losing life or limb, has a CLEARLY DEFINED objective in his mind and the minds of his commanders, MAJOR ADVANTAGE he is a local. He knows all the ins and outs. He knows where to stash weapons, he knows all the soviet era supply routes into Pakistan(which post 2015 is a dead end for Afghans as most of the Pakistani territory has been strategically cleansed of Taliban/Foreign proxy presence by Pakistani SF and military and driven over the Afghan border into bordering provinces such as Kunar, Nungarhar and Khost etc) and best points for ambusing US troops. He knows how to use ancient network of tunnels originally for irrigation to blow up US/ NATO convoys. They are vv good at shoot and scoot tactics.
In short the US forces face the same dillema the british redcoats in the revolutionary war faced against the continental army. I.e GORILLA WARFARE. At that time American colonists were a reasonably trained, rag tag army/militia organized by former redcoat officers etc. And the British were a very well disciplined/organized conventional army.
It is so interesting how history repeats itself.
We could go on n on n on pointing out blunders of US commanders and politicians.
But
It ultimately it boils down to this, the US military, it thinkers and commanders have forgotten its WWII era ethos where it was not the equipment but the brain, grit and passion of the American soldier that won the war for US in Pacific and Europe. Instead it has for far too long concentrated on making the biggest, shiniest toy and feeding the mammoth defence industrial complex.
Now the US actually wants to leave. Afghanistan.
But how should it go about doing it without looking like a sore loser??? Is the trillion dollar question.
