First off, anyone at Sr. Manager level or higher, knows that they CAN'T openly discuss certain things with their wage employees - there is such a things as "company confidential". Now... if you are "friends" outside of work, and they trust you enough to not shoot off your mouth - while attributing the information back to the source - then they might tell you a thing or two. Otherwise, you're not going to get decent information. With that said...
Many requests are being rejected so that the ranks can be thinned through attrition.
Remember way back, when I was asked how overages of personnel were to be "moved out the door"?? I was constantly being asked "what exactly do you mean by attrition".
On this statement, your "source" is being forthright.
Which led me to ask about buyouts. He said extremely unlikely, that reductions in the workforce were coming through attrition.
Go back in history, and you'll find this was already brought up. Again, your source was being forthright.
He also said there's no effort being made to reduce everyone to minimum hours.
At this point in time, that is correct. What they are doing now, is doing their best to eliminate overtime. Once the October bomb is dropped, then the next step will be to start pushing full-timers down as close to minimums as possible... all to help foster... wait for it.... wait for it.... ATTRITION.
I asked if Express would be a strictly overnight service and got the standard it's very possible due to the changing nature of the marketplace.
On this one, he was playing coy. Express would like to just dump 2nd day service - they really would. The thing preventing that can be summed up in three letters.... UPS.
If Express did just outright dump 2nd day and became an overnight only operation, UPS would not only get all that 2nd day volume, but customers would also start sending their overnight through UPS too (who wants to divide their overnight volume to one company, their 2nd day to another, then their non-urgent stuff to potentially a 3rd company). The solution to this "dilemma" has already been adequately discussed - shifting the DELIVERY of non-overnight over to Ground.
Did say he didn't know all the details of the October announcement yet and he's up the food chain a bit. Came across as honest.
Depending on just how far up the food chain, he was either being honest (lower down on the chain), or playing coy. Sr. Managers have already received a general idea of what is going to happen in October (they have to treat the info as company confidential). The further up the chain, the more "enlightened" they are as to the scope and consequences of the changes.
Just as we talk about what is "company confidential" information here, rest assured, those at district and regional level also have their grapevine where they talk about "stuff" (which they aren't supposed to disclose to wage employees, or even ops mangers). How do you think I get my information???
