Rumors on the WC is the same as the Midwest. Word from one manager is, they're looking to take a loop and divide it into Belt Pullers and FO drivers. The FO guys would start early, knock out FO for that loops area and return to station. Then they would jump into their truck, which has been loaded by the Belt puller. The FO driver will then balance out and go back out again. P1, P2 and early oncalls and return to station and clock out. The Belt puller would go out and get off p1,p2 and his PU RTE but the PU RTE may be only 2-3 times a week give or take the over under of 35 per week rule. Nobody is to get over 40 in the week if at all possible. So looks like the 52-55 work weeks are long gone. Lots of couriers have based their budgets on OT but for the ones that didnt, having a lot more free time may be easy to get use to. As long as I have a FT job, even if its only 38 a week, I take it. I don't have 4 cars to pay off or anything out of my budget and I hope most everyone else is in the same boat but If I was 21 years old, I would be looking to find better things.

And that is what I've been trying to tell Couriers for the past year and a half (at least...). The sad thing, is it will only get worse once Express is finally able to shift the delivery of non-overnight over to Ground.

Talked to someone with serious clout today(and that's all I'll say about who he is). He said there is a hiring freeze of sorts occurring. The jobs posted in JCATS were resubmitted for approval before being posted, which is why there aren't many openings now. Only positions that absolutely must be filled to meet operational needs are being approved. Many requests are being rejected so that the ranks can be thinned through attrition. Which led me to ask about buyouts. He said extremely unlikely, that reductions in the workforce were coming through attrition. He also said there's no effort being made to reduce everyone to minimum hours. I asked if Express would be a strictly overnight service and got the standard it's very possible due to the changing nature of the marketplace. As I said, he has serious clout, didn't try to argue anything with him. Did say he didn't know all the details of the October announcement yet and he's up the food chain a bit. Came across as honest.

Then again Fred and/or MT3 may have told him to keep his mouth shut. Just sayin'................

If he's wrong about a buyout no one will be happier than me but looks like I'll be working awhile longer. Not for much, but I'll be working until I can leave.

First off, anyone at Sr. Manager level or higher, knows that they CAN'T openly discuss certain things with their wage employees - there is such a things as "company confidential". Now... if you are "friends" outside of work, and they trust you enough to not shoot off your mouth - while attributing the information back to the source - then they might tell you a thing or two. Otherwise, you're not going to get decent information. With that said...

Many requests are being rejected so that the ranks can be thinned through attrition.

Remember way back, when I was asked how overages of personnel were to be "moved out the door"?? I was constantly being asked "what exactly do you mean by attrition".

On this statement, your "source" is being forthright.

Which led me to ask about buyouts. He said extremely unlikely, that reductions in the workforce were coming through attrition.

Go back in history, and you'll find this was already brought up. Again, your source was being forthright.

He also said there's no effort being made to reduce everyone to minimum hours.

At this point in time, that is correct. What they are doing now, is doing their best to eliminate overtime. Once the October bomb is dropped, then the next step will be to start pushing full-timers down as close to minimums as possible... all to help foster... wait for it.... wait for it.... ATTRITION.

I asked if Express would be a strictly overnight service and got the standard it's very possible due to the changing nature of the marketplace.

On this one, he was playing coy. Express would like to just dump 2nd day service - they really would. The thing preventing that can be summed up in three letters.... UPS.

If Express did just outright dump 2nd day and became an overnight only operation, UPS would not only get all that 2nd day volume, but customers would also start sending their overnight through UPS too (who wants to divide their overnight volume to one company, their 2nd day to another, then their non-urgent stuff to potentially a 3rd company). The solution to this "dilemma" has already been adequately discussed - shifting the DELIVERY of non-overnight over to Ground.

Did say he didn't know all the details of the October announcement yet and he's up the food chain a bit. Came across as honest.

Depending on just how far up the food chain, he was either being honest (lower down on the chain), or playing coy. Sr. Managers have already received a general idea of what is going to happen in October (they have to treat the info as company confidential). The further up the chain, the more "enlightened" they are as to the scope and consequences of the changes.

Just as we talk about what is "company confidential" information here, rest assured, those at district and regional level also have their grapevine where they talk about "stuff" (which they aren't supposed to disclose to wage employees, or even ops mangers). How do you think I get my information???

Yeah I told him I'm hoping I'll be able to get at least a solid 40 hrs until I retire but figure if Express is a strictly overnight service I'll be lucky to get 37. He didn't dispute that.

It sounds like he wasn't trying to "baffle you with BS", but rather give as honest as an answer as he could while staying within the limits as specified by the company. You may want to keep in touch with this individual, and get periodic status updates from him.

Transferring soon, and it was one of those spur of the moment what the heck I'll ask while he's here things. And as much as I was hoping for a buyout I'm glad to know now it's not going to happen rather than drag this out several months.

Thanks for the info. I agree with Ricochet, you got the most info from him you could get without him crossing the line. Good luck at the new station Van.

IMO, the buyout idea was always a trial balloon, intentionally floated to keep a few "desirable" employees around and to keep morale at an acceptable level until October.
