The White House and everything in it, including the salaries of all occupants past and present, is/was paid for by the taxpayers. It's not "their house" and "their beige carpet" it's our house and our beige carpet. This is not a dictatorship where the leaders must be venerated, these politicians made a choice to be public figures and giving them the finger is a uniquely American right of expression.
Did they have the "right" to express themselves in such a manner? Yes.
Was it a mature and responsible thing for them to do? No.
If they want to be the public face of the gay rights movement then they need to grow up, carry themselves with a little more class and dignity, and remember that, rightly or wrongly, their actions will be perceived by the public as representing the attitudes of the gay community as a whole.
I highly doubt that Martin Luther King JR would have chosen to flip off a portait of George Washington when he visited JFK in the White house, even though Washington owned slaves.
