Good bye to the Friday after Thanksgiving

I honestly ( maybe stupidly) , think ups has seen error in its ways in dealing with people's Christmas gifts. They can not, and will not let another disaster of a holiday happen, hence all the new ft job bids up. Christmas 2014 will be different from all past peak seasons. Mark my words.

My center doesn't have any new full time bids up. Christmas will be different, I agree because we will be forced to work Saturdays if the hours permit. Get ready for 60 hour mandated weeks for peak.

Our center was completely blown out last peak. We have no more trucks, nor space to load them if we had them.
Our volume has been sky high ever since peak 2013 and I believe this peak will be even heavier than last years. we WILL be working Saturdays

My weekdays were so long that I couldn't work Saturdays even if I wanted.

But how does running Wednesday's Nobody-Gives-A-:censored2:-Because-It's-The-Day-Before-A-Major-Holiday-Volume really impact Monday?

The volume is generated from Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

I know--Seriously. Last peak I was out until 10pm every single night, then back in building sheeting up the rest I brought back as either missed or EC depending on how management felt that night. I was out of hours every friday night so they couldn't have forced me in on a Saturday if they wanted to. I was getting 350-450 packages stuffed into a little 700, stop count north of 250 (it peaked around 350 stops) on a run out in the dark woods with icy driveways and snow.
No idea how things will work this year, but I'll be on a different route in a different center anyway this peak.

We have basically just backfilled the unfilled vacancies that hadn't been getting filled for the last year or two...so like 6-7 drivers have made seniority in our building this year. No real hiring spree here other than that...and the casuals.

This thread has derailed so I will contribute as well...

My hub is in the midst of making major renovations to allow for 53ft. trailers. That decision combined with all of the independents brought our major hub last peak to a crawl. We just weren't designed for that size trailer, but some higher up suit thought for sure that it would make things run faster by cutting out a swap for the second short trailer.

It wasn't the ice storm.

Rumor has it that a full time sup offed himself inside the building because the DM was going to make him fall on his sword for the cluster :censored2: of not getting trailers on and off. But his death was more complicated that just that.

i might have missed someone else saying it but didnt the closing of some smaller building have a lot to do with packages not getting moved these last few years? Ex. Bristol and winston salem closes therefore Greensboro has to run extra?

I'm so used to taking that day off or that week as a vacation . From now on I will take that as a vacation week. I do feel sorry for those with mall routes black Friday wow you will never get your stuff delivered. I enjoy thanksgiving more than Xmas cause of the break in the chaos and to step back and enjoy family for a few days. I'm so relaxed until the mayhem cranks up again. Please let me know your thoughts.

My only problem is that my wife has to work so now I will have to find someone to watch my kids that day. Plus I sometimes wander out for some of the Black Friday sales if I feel like it.

I've always thought about working since it's easy money and double time plus the paid day but now I'm being forced to, so it is what it is.

Well, I don't have to worry about working that day anymore, but in the past, when we had it off, I kind of looked forward to that day. My wife and grown daughter really enjoy black Friday shopping. Usually, they have a skull session Thursday night, getting things lined out. We start the day with a breakfast at IHOP, then hit the first stores that open. I'm not crazy about crowds, but I don't mind being the "wheel man." I drop them off at the front door, then park somewhere out of the way. They call me on the cell, I meet them at the door, then off to the next store. zoomzoomzoom.
